Enjoy Hawaii Even on a Tight Budget

(Re posted for those who will avail of the deal above)

Last December, my family of four spent four-day vacation in the island of Oahu. I initially had second thoughts of going  due to our present financial situation; taking a vacation is the farthest thing in my mind. But how can you passed up a deal of $1,400 for a family of four that includes plane, hotel and taxes? Also,  it’s been a long while since my family had went altogether for a trip. It was, in fact way back August 2005 when we drove and visited friends in Canada.

We left on Thursday morning and decided to fly-and-park nearby LAX which costs us $40. After an hour flight delay Via United, we landed in Honolulu at 1:30 pm. We proceeded to pick up our rental car from Budget that costs us $85 for the entire stay and unlimited mileage. On our way to Castle Ocean Resort where we were booked, we passed by Costco. We bought some bread, milk, bottled water, etc. and enjoyed a late lunch at Max’s next to the store.

We found the room to be really nice with 2 queen beds and a bonus twin bed. It has a kitchenette with a mini-fridge, microwave oven, coffee maker, cook top and all pots, dishes and utensils. The room is on 8Th floor with a balcony where we can view the city. Our first night was spent strolling in Waikiki Beach which is about 5 minutes walk from our hotel. We saw Hawaii nightlife while walking down the International Marketplace.

Crazy Airline Stories

An American Airlines passenger from Rio de Janeiro went nuts at a flight attendant on a JFK-bound flight on Thursday when he saw that his path to the bathroom was being blocked by a beverage cart, according to the New York Post.

Michael Isabelle of Massachusetts kicked the cart repeatedly until it fell over and punched the hapless flight attendant, Carlos Carrico, in the stomach. Carrico and two others  wrestled Isabelle to the ground and handcuffed him. Once the plane landed, Isabelle was taken to a local hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

Aircapades (Airline Woes)

Today, I read a heartwarming story about a grandpa who was rushing to see his 3 year-old son be taken out of life-support. The boy was beaten by his daughter’s boyfriend. Although he made it to LAX two hours before his flight to Denver, he ended up running late. He had a tough time checking his bags and going through security. No matter how much pleading he made to TSA and Southwest employees, it fell on deaf ears.

As soon as he made through security, he grabbed his shoes and ran to the boarding gate. There, he was met by the pilot who held the plane that was supposed to take off 11:50 until 12:02 just to accommodate him. What an exceptional customer service by this pilot!!! I wonder how many more people like him are around other airline industries.

On my previous trips, I have flown through about every different airline. It’s because I don’t care about mileage points I could earn by being loyal to a particular airline. I care more on who’s having a promo.
